Secondary Glazing in Windsor, Ascot & Henley (SL4, SL5, RG9)
Specialist guidance for London & Home Counties heritage properties — published 15 September 2026.
Windsor, Ascot and Henley sit close enough to Heathrow to feel it, and carry enough listed and conservation-area housing that replacement windows are frequently not an option. That makes internal secondary glazing the default upgrade route across SL4, SL5 and RG9.
Aircraft and road noise
Windsor lies under Heathrow's westerly departure corridor, so the noise arrives as regular overhead events from early morning, strongest in the town centre and along the river. Add the A308, A332, the M4 corridor and Windsor's own tourist traffic, and central properties carry a genuine acoustic load. For exposed bedrooms we specify 10.8mm acoustic laminate with the deepest achievable cavity and careful perimeter sealing — the approach is set out in our flight-path guide and the noise reduction guide.
Ascot's brief is quieter and more seasonal — race-week traffic and the A329 — while Henley's centres on the A4130, riverside events and regatta week.
Heritage constraints
Windsor town centre has an exceptional concentration of listed buildings and a conservation area covering most of the historic core, with Eton across the bridge under similar control. Henley's centre and riverside are likewise designated. In these settings a like-for-like replacement window is difficult and a modern double-glazed unit is normally refused outright. Secondary glazing is accepted because nothing changes externally and the whole system can be removed without trace — the consent detail is in our listed buildings guide, and our comparison with double glazing explains why.
Property types and systems
Windsor and Eton bring Georgian and Victorian townhouses with tall sashes, often on narrow plots; Ascot and Sunningdale add large interwar and modern houses on generous plots; Henley mixes Georgian frontages with Victorian terraces and riverside villas. Vertical sliding units match original sashes and keep full opening; casements take hinged units; leaded lights and Gothic-arched heads need a surveyed bespoke frame rather than a stock size.
Installed pricing in SL4, SL5 and RG9
Typical projects run £850–£1,900 per window installed, all professional installation included. Listed-property work sits above the midpoint because of survey time and bespoke frame profiles. Where the property is large, treating the elevation facing the departure path first captures most of the acoustic gain.
