Secondary Glazing in Clapham & Battersea (SW4, SW11)

Specialist guidance for London & Home Counties heritage properties — published 15 September 2026.

Clapham and Battersea are dense, largely Victorian and unusually noisy for residential south London. Most enquiries we take from SW4 and SW11 come from two situations: a bedroom facing a bus-heavy high street, or a flat sitting above or beside licensed premises.

    Where the noise comes from

Clapham High Street, Clapham Road, Battersea Park Road, York Road and Queenstown Road carry sustained bus and delivery traffic, and the Northern Line surfaces nearby. Add the Nine Elms construction corridor and the late-night pull of Clapham High Street and Northcote Road, and the noise load runs from early morning deliveries to closing time. For street-facing bedrooms we specify 10.8mm acoustic laminate as standard, which paired with a 100–150mm air gap gives a large enough step to change how a room feels rather than merely dulling it.

Property types and what fits them

The dominant stock is the two-, three- and four-storey Victorian terrace, usually with two-over-two sashes and often converted into upper and lower maisonettes. Vertical sliding units match the original sash and keep full opening for ventilation and cleaning. Battersea's mansion blocks around the park and the newer conversions near Queenstown Road often have wide box reveals, which is good news acoustically because the deeper cavity does much of the work.

Bay windows on the through-terraces need a surveyed, faceted set rather than one flat panel — the approach is set out in our bay window guide.

Conservation areas in Wandsworth and Lambeth

Clapham Old Town, Clapham Common North Side, Park Town, Battersea Park and the Shaftesbury Estate all sit within conservation areas. Secondary glazing is normally accepted because it is fully reversible and internal, leaving the external elevation unchanged. Where a property is also listed, consent detail matters — our listed buildings guide covers the evidence conservation officers ask for.

Installed pricing in SW4 and SW11

Typical Clapham and Battersea projects run £850–£1,600 per window installed, including survey, manufacture and fitting. Thermal-only specifications sit at the lower end; acoustic-spec bedrooms facing the high street sit at the upper end. A whole-house figure for a four-bedroom terrace is usually quoted across 10–14 openings, and we normally recommend phasing by room priority rather than treating everything at once.
