Secondary Glazing in Chiswick & Ealing (W4, W5, W13)

Specialist guidance for London & Home Counties heritage properties — published 15 September 2026.

West London combines two of the hardest noise sources in the capital — high-speed arterial traffic and Heathrow approach — with some of its most tightly controlled heritage streets. That combination is why Chiswick and Ealing generate consistently high-specification enquiries.

    Arterial traffic first

The A4 Great West Road, Chiswick High Road, the A40 Western Avenue, Uxbridge Road and the M4 approach carry sustained traffic at speed, which produces continuous low-frequency load rather than intermittent peaks. Low frequencies are where thin laminate underperforms, so for any elevation facing these roads we specify 10.8mm acoustic laminate and push the cavity as close to 150mm as the reveal allows. The reasoning is in our air gap guide and traffic noise guide.

On easterly operations, Heathrow approach traffic adds overhead peaks across W4, W5 and W13 from early morning — a separate problem covered in our flight-path guide.

Bedford Park and Ealing's conservation streets

Bedford Park is one of the most closely protected Victorian suburbs in London, with a high concentration of listed and locally listed houses; Chiswick Mall, Strand-on-the-Green, Ealing Common, Montpelier and Hanger Hill all sit in conservation areas. Original casements and sashes here carry significant character, often with leaded or margin lights. Because secondary glazing is internal and reversible, it is the route that leaves those windows in place — and the only realistic route where replacement would be refused.

    Property types and systems

Chiswick is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraces and Bedford Park's Queen Anne-revival houses; Ealing adds substantial Edwardian villas, interwar semis and a large stock of mansion-block flats near Ealing Broadway. Sashes take vertical sliding units; Bedford Park's tall casements and leaded lights take hinged units that preserve full opening; wide bays are surveyed and made as faceted sets.

    Installed pricing in W4, W5 and W13

Typical Chiswick and Ealing projects run £900–£1,700 per window installed, professional installation included. Acoustic-spec rooms facing the A4 or A40 sit at the top of the band, and leaded or margin-light windows add survey time. For houses with a noisy front and quiet rear, treating the front elevation first delivers nearly all the benefit for roughly half the budget.
