Acoustic Glazing Trends Across London: 6.8mm to 10.8mm

The clearest trend in London acoustic glazing is thickness. Where 6.8mm laminate was the standard upgrade specification, 10.8mm acoustic laminate — typically Stadip Silence or Optiphon — now accounts for the majority of London projects on noise-exposed elevations.
Why the step up is being made
Acoustic performance is perceptual. A 10dB improvement is heard as roughly a halving of loudness, and the move from 6.8mm to 10.8mm with a 100–150mm cavity is where a treated window crosses from 'quieter' to 'a different room'. The premium is roughly 25% on glass, and the measured gain is consistent enough that we now recommend it by default for street-facing bedrooms. Where it matters most in London
Three noise categories dominate our London enquiries:

The cavity matters as much as the glass
A 10.8mm pane fitted 40mm off the primary window will underperform a 6.8mm pane at 150mm. The air gap decouples the two panes and does much of the acoustic work — the reasoning is set out in our air gap guide. Where reveal depth is limited, we specify the deepest achievable cavity before increasing glass thickness.
Realistic measured outcomes

A 10.8mm acoustic system with a 150mm cavity delivers 42–50dB total, depending on frame sealing and surrounding fabric.
